Every time I introduce défi to people, they immediately use their workplace wellness program as a point of reference. I usually end up explaining the difference.
Wellness = a healthy state of wellbeing free from disease.
Well-being = a contented state of being happy and health and prosperous.
We are now living in an age where the terms “wellness” and “well-being” have become increasingly interchangeable. défi is a well-being platform.
While it is true that the two concepts share some similarities, there are also fundamental differences between them. It is important to understand the nuances between wellness and well-being as well as why it is essential to avoid using the two words interchangeably.
Wellness can be defined as an individual’s ability to live a healthy lifestyle. This includes physical, mental, and emotional health. It is the state of being in good health and maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes proper nutrition, exercise, and stress management.
On the other hand, well-being is an individual’s overall sense of contentment and satisfaction. It involves a deeper understanding of one’s self, purpose, and values. It also involves a connection to a larger community or environment. Well-being is a holistic approach to living that includes spiritual, physical, social, professional, financial, and emotional health. It’s the overall satisfaction, happiness and success of an individual. It’s the state of feeling good about one’s life and having a sense of purpose and balance.
While both terms are related, they are also distinct concepts. Wellness is primarily focused on physical and mental health, while well-being is focused on a deeper understanding of oneself and one’s connection to the world around them.
Using the two terms interchangeably can be misleading and can lead to confusion about the intended message. People and programs should clearly identify what they do to avoid any miscommunication. Doing so will help ensure that individuals and organizations are properly served.
